Outdoor Stone Features

Natural Stone for Your Garden & Grounds

Natural stone transforms an outdoor space in a way that no other material can match. Where concrete slabs fade, timber rots, and composite decking warps, stone only becomes more beautiful with age — mellowing and weathering into its surroundings to look as though it has always been there.

Stone Design Scotland creates bespoke stone landscaping features across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, from intimate town garden patios to sweeping estate grounds. We design, source, and install everything in natural stone — granite, sandstone, slate, and whin — chosen to complement your home and landscape.

Every landscaping project begins with a site visit where we take time to understand your vision, assess the ground conditions, and discuss the stone options that will work best for your space, your house, and your budget. We handle all groundworks, drainage, and construction — leaving you with a beautiful, durable outdoor space you will use for decades.

Natural stone patio Aberdeen

Stone Patios & Paving

A natural stone patio is the most enduring and attractive outdoor living surface you can choose. Aberdeen granite, Caithness slate, and Caledonian sandstone all make outstanding paving materials — each bringing a distinct character while remaining completely at home in the Scottish landscape.

We prepare a thorough sub-base with proper compaction and drainage before laying any stone, ensuring your patio remains flat, stable, and free-draining through Aberdeen's cold wet winters. Joints are finished with an appropriate mortar or sand to suit the stone type and your maintenance preferences.

We also build stone garden paths to complement patios — connecting areas of your garden in a material that wears well underfoot, requires no painting or staining, and looks better every year as moss and lichen begin to give it character.

Stone retaining wall and terracing Aberdeen

Retaining Walls & Terracing

Many Aberdeenshire gardens slope significantly — and a well-designed stone retaining wall system can transform an unusable hillside into a series of beautiful, practical terraces. Whether we build in drystone for a natural, rural look or in mortared granite for a more formal finish, the result is a dramatic improvement in both the usability and the visual impact of the garden.

All retaining walls are built on appropriate foundations with adequate drainage provision. We assess the load the wall will be expected to carry and design the structure accordingly — a garden terrace wall requires very different engineering considerations to a small decorative raised bed.

Raised stone beds have become increasingly popular across Aberdeen gardens. Built in either drystone or mortared granite, they add real architectural structure to a planting scheme while providing excellent growing conditions — improved drainage, better root warmth, and cleaner delineation of planting areas.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What stone types do you use for landscaping?

We work with a range of natural stones appropriate for Scottish conditions — Aberdeen granite, Caithness slate, Caledonian sandstone, and various whin stone types. We will recommend the most suitable option based on your design preferences, the setting, and your budget.

How do stone patios handle the Scottish weather?

Natural stone is exceptionally well suited to the Scottish climate. Aberdeen granite in particular is one of the most frost-resistant building materials available. Provided the patio is correctly laid with good drainage and an appropriate sub-base, it will withstand everything Aberdeen's weather can throw at it.

Can you work on a sloped garden?

Yes — sloped gardens are exactly where stone retaining walls and terracing come into their own. We carry out a site assessment to understand the gradient, soil type, and drainage situation before designing a retaining solution appropriate for your specific garden.

Do stone features require much maintenance?

Very little. Natural stone requires no painting, staining, or sealing. Occasional washing with a pressure washer to remove moss and algae buildup is typically all that is required. Pointing should be inspected every few years and repaired if cracked or loose.

How long does a stone landscaping project take?

A typical residential patio takes 3–7 days depending on size and groundwork requirements. More extensive projects involving retaining walls, steps, and multiple areas may take 2–4 weeks. We will provide a clear timescale with your written quote.
