What Does Drystone Walling Cost in Scotland?
It is one of the most common questions we are asked, and the honest answer is: it depends. Drystone walling is skilled, hand-built work, and the cost of a project is shaped by several things. Rather than quote a misleading figure, here is what actually drives the price — so you know what to think about before getting a quote.
New build or repair?
Building a new wall and repairing an old one are different jobs. A new wall needs foundations and a full supply of suitable stone. A repair might mean rebuilding a fallen section, re-coping a top, or taking down and rebuilding a bulging length — often reusing the existing stone, which can keep costs down.
The stone
Stone is a major factor. If there is reclaimed or existing stone on site that can be reused, that helps. If stone needs to be sourced and delivered, that adds cost — and different stone types vary in price and in how quickly they can be worked.
Access and location
How easily we can get to the wall matters. A roadside dyke is straightforward; a wall up a hill, across a field or behind a house — where stone has to be moved by hand or barrow — takes longer. For projects further afield, travel is a factor too, though for the right job we cover the whole of Aberdeenshire, Deeside and beyond.
Height, length and detail
Taller walls use more stone and take longer. Features like curves, steps, retaining sections, cope detailing or rebuilding around gateposts all add time and skill.
